Inspired by the recent passing of Le Carre, one of the world’s greatest fiction writers in the genre of espionage, it is worthwhile to revisit this age-old industry. Some of the world’s greatest writers have taken their cues from this dark world of tactical maneuvering, hidden agendas and military intelligentsia. In my opinion, here are the top ten qualities of one:

#1 You are a detail-minded person with a strategic mind for facts and figures.

#2 You have a passion for deciphering ancient codes and languages and you probably speak more than a handful of them.

#3 You can lie without batting an eyelid and are probably rather skilled at it.

#4 There is always an intricate concoction in your mind with a step-by-step plan of how things will pan out. Should the first plan not work out, your mind is already on auto-pilot concocting the next.

#5 You and your officer have a special code of trust, to which it may not be breached or else there will disastrous consequences.

#6 You understand how to read even the most complicated maps and have the precision of a skilled carpenter.

#7 You know some basic self-defense that might have been passed down to you either from a mentor or picking it up yourself.

#8 The slightest movements or sensations can trigger you. This is because you are sensitive to the environment around you, or you have needed to run away from potential robbers, killers and stalkers during dangerous situations where street smarts are required.

#9 You have at least high-school level of mathematical ability in order to calculate risks and potential windfalls.

#10 Lastly you are able to talk to almost anyone you meet — even those whose values you greatly disagree with!
